What Is An EPK?
For indie musicians an organized, professionally prepared media press kit (aka electronic press kit) is one of the most powerful ways to sell your brand and music. A electronic press kit acts as your online resume, chronicling your accomplishments and providing detailed information about your music roots. A professionally prepared EPK will be entertaining as well as informative, containing music, video, photos, and any other material appropriate to promote the musician in question.

Preparing Your Press Kit
At the forefront of your press kit should be a detailed, professionally written biography explaining how your influences, upbringing, and other key events in your past have shaped your music career. The bio should be clear, concise, and to the point. Eliminate unnecessary details and provide only what’s needed to convey your message. Ideally, you’ll want to highlight 2-4 major accomplishments that you’ve made in your music career. Even if you have hundreds of accolades, you’ll want to narrow it down to 2-4 of your best. Doing this will reduce “information overload” and make your bio more easily digestible by the reader. Stay away from generic writing and writing that is in the first person (using the words I, me, we, etc). If needed, hire a professional to write your biography.
For an indie musician, the focal selling point of your EPK should be the quality of music you bring to the table. Professionally engineered and mastered music is a must. Give all credit where it is due, listing the artist, featured artists, producers, songwriters, and engineers if at all possible.
Minimum: 2-3 Songs
Photographs that showcase your talents and professional associations should be included in your electronic press kit. The goal of your photos should be to sell your music and brand. Photographs that might be suitable for Facebook may not make the cut for your EPK. If possible include captions describing the details of your photographs for viewers.
Videos are one of the most popular and interactive forms of media on the internet. Consequently, having high quality footage of yourself performing at shows, tours, recording music, or just going about your day is key to selling yourself to potential investors and fans. As with photographs, provide a detailed description of the video.
Minimum: 2-3 Videos
Other Important Information To Be Included
If you have any upcoming shows or other pertinent press, list that in your online EPK as well. Above all else be sure to include your contact information. Social network links, management or booking emails, and phone numbers should all be included in your electronic press kit package.
